Dental pain may feel sharp, dull, pulsing, or throbbing. A pulsing or throbbing tooth pain often signals inflammation or infection inside the tooth. Dull tooth pain may come from grinding, gum disease, or early decay. Tooth pain at night is common because lying down increases blood flow to the head, putting pressure on sensitive nerves. Dental swelling and infections Swelling around the tooth or jaw is a warning sign of a dental infection. Infections occur when bacteria reach the inner pulp of the tooth, usually through deep cavities or cracks. Can antibiotics cure a dental infection?
