What Should You Do If You Chip or Break a Tooth? A chipped or broken tooth can happen unexpectedly—from biting into something hard, a fall, or a sports injury. While it can feel alarming, taking the right steps quickly can help protect your tooth and prevent further damage. First, gently rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area and remove any debris. If you find the broken piece of the tooth, keep it moist in milk or saliva until you can see your dentist. If there is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze until it stops. To reduce swelling or discomfort, place a cold compress on the outside of your cheek and avoid chewing on the injured side. If the tooth feels sharp or jagged, dental wax or sugar-free gum can temporarily protect your tongue and cheeks until treatment. It’s also best to avoid very hot, cold, or hard foods, as the exposed area may be sensitive. Even small chips should be evaluated by a dentist. Left untreated, damage can lead to sensitivity, cracks, decay, or infection.
